The volcanoes in Indonesia are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. It has 452 volcanoes (more than 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes).The Ring of Fire is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt.
In Indonesia, the active ones raise across Sumatra Island, Java Island, Kalimantan Island, Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi Island, Maluku Islands, and Papua Island. The highest Volcano in each g group of Island or Islands is :
- Mount Kerinci, 3,805 m, in Jambi Province, Sumatra Island;
- Mount Semeru, 3,676 m, in East Java Province, Java Island;
- Mount Rinjani, 3,726 m, in West Nusa Tenggara Provice, Lesser Sunda Islands;
- Mount Bukit Raya, 2,278 m, in West Kalimantan Province, Kalimantan Island;
- Mount Latimojong, 3,430 m, in South Sulawesi Province, Sulawesi Island;
- Mount Binaiya,3,027 m, in Maluku Province, Maluku Islands,
- Mount Carstenza Pyramid, 4,884 m, in Papua Province, Papua Island.
