The West Coast of South Sumatra in Lampung Province, "A Paradise For Surfers and Bodyboarders"

Geographically, the province of Lampung is surrounded by sea waters. Adjacent to the south, Lampung is separated from Java by the Sunda Strait, in ​​the east coast by the Java Sea and the west coast by the Indonesia Ocean.This geographical setting makes Lampung Province rich in beaches measuring as long as 1167 km and dotted with as many as 169 big and small islands which have the potential as  maritime and beach tourism destinations including Sumatra coastline along the west coast of Pesisir Barat regency with Krui as the capital city.


Hidden behind the strip of highland range called Bukit Barisan, parallel along Sumatra coastline, there lie at least 17  beaches and marine tourist points spread in 11 Kecamatan, or districts, in Pesisir Barat regency covering around 210 km long of the coastline. The districts include: Kecamatan Bengkunat Belimbing, Kecamatan Bengkunat, Kecamatan Ngambur,Kecamatan Pesisir Selatan, Kecamatan Krui Selatan, Kecamatan Pesisir Tengah, Kecamatan Way Krui, Kecamatan Karya Penggawa, Kecamatan Pesisir Utara,Lemong, and Kecamatan Pulau Pisang.


Tanjung Setia in Kecamatan Pesisi Selatan is the most favorite site of surfing and bodyboarding among foriegn tourists visiting Pesisir Barat regency. Perfect waves are characteristic of Tanjung Setia Beach as shown by the height that reaches 6 to 7 meters. This makes the beach a destination of surfing from around the world, high waves on the shore is usually held in June until August. The waves there are not only high but also has a length approximately 200 meters.


Located around 273 km or 5 hour drive from the provincial capital of Bandar Lampung, in the village of Tanjung Setia, West Lampung, Tanjung Setia Beach is hit by consistent swell from the Indian Ocean. Although not so well known as those in Bali and Lombok or Nias Islands, according survey among visiting surfers from all over the world the waves at Tanjung Setia Beach is touted as one of the best waves in the world. The waves parallel to the one in Hawaii. Locations of diving here rated legendary among dive enthusiasts.

Visiting the Lampung west coast in the vicinity of Tanjung Setia offers you at least 12 quality surf breaks. You can surf in the following surf breaks : Honey Smacks, Jenny's point, Jimmy's Left, Jimmy's Right, Krui Left, Krui Right, Leftovers, Mandiri Beachbreak, Pulau Pisang (Banana Island), The Peak, Ujung Bocur - Karang Nyimbur, Way Jambu (Sumtra Pipeline), and surfbreaks yet unnamed and unspoiled. There is a number of reasons why should try surfing in the South Sumatra coast. First, all surf spots are easily accessible from the main road heading south north along Sumatra coastline, from  around 100 m to 500 m. Second, The average crowd on the main surf breaks is 10 to 30 during peak season (May - early October) and 5 to 25 during the off season (November - April), the weather from November to April can be severe with the wind howling in from the Indian Ocean during the period the locals call the Windy Season.Third, the incredibly friendly locals always happy to give directions,particularly, when venture out to explore the unnamed yet unspoiled surf breaks. The last but not least, there are other attractions you can do here like visiting the UNESCO’s World Heritage Listed Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) as it offers guided day tours if your surfed out or would just like to explore the Sumatran jungle.

Visit Lampung Province 2017, " The Treasure of Sumatra ".

Lampung is a province of Indonesia on the southern tip of Sumatra Island covering a total area of 35.587 km2, with Bandar Lampung as the capital city. Geographically,Lampung Province is located East - West between: 103º 40 '- 105º 50' East Longitude, and North - South between: 6º 45 '- 3º 45' South Latitude.

Located on the southernmost of Sumatra Island, Lampung province is surrounded by oceans. Adjacent to the south, Lampung is separated from Java by the Sunda Strait, while the area of ​​the east coast by the Java Sea and is situated adjacent to the west coast of the Ocean Indonesia.

This geographical setting makes Lampung Province rich in beaches and small islands which have the potential as  maritime and beach tourism destinations. A marine tourism destination which is gaining popularity among domestic visitors in Lampung is Teluk Kiluan or Kiluan Bay. It lies in Pesawaran Regency and is situated on migration path of dolphin making it a perfect site for dolphin watching. 


Surrounded by sea waters, Lampung Province offers a lot of marine and beach tourism destination along Lampung bay, which is administratively shared by four regencies : South Lampung, Bandar Lampung City, Pesawaran Regency, Tanggamus Regency, there lie an array of  tourism sites, frequently visited by locals as well as domestic tourists. Among the beaches are Pantai Guci Kapal Batu, Pantai Wartawan in South Lampung; Pantai Pasir Putih in Bandar Lampung, Pantai Queen Artha, Pantai Duta,Pantai Klara, Pantai Mutun and Pulau Tangkil, Pantai Sari Ringgung, Pulau Pahawang, Pantai Tunjung Putus in Pesawaran Regency; Pantai Piabung in Tanggamus Regency.

 
Facing directly to Indian Ocean, Pesisir Barat Regency endowed with hundreds kilometer long coastline is very potential to be developed into International surfing destination in Lampung. This area is a wave rich  surf zone- rights, lefts, and beachies. Swell sizes range regularly between 6-12ft from March to November and 3-6ft throughout the rest of the year. Hardly no crowd like in Bali or Lombok beaches, make it a perfect destination for surfers and bodyboarders.

There are many beaches along the coast. The west coast of Lampung Province offers at least 17 beach attraction sites including Tanjung Setia Beach, Selalau Beach, Way Jambu Beach, Labuhan Jukung Beach, Way Haru Beach, Way Sindi Beach, and Suka Negara Beach.

Tanjung Setia Beach is already well known internationally as "A Paradise for Surfers and Bodyboarders". Topographically, Lampung province mainly consists of highland and lowland zones. the highland zone is made up of the areas covered by mountain ranges called Bukit Barisan,known as the 'Andes of Sumatra’,  which spans from the northern most part of Sumatra Island mostly occupied by Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) to the southern most of Sumatra Island covered by Lampung province. It is on this well known key spine of Bukit Barisan lying a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra consisting of three national parks: Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) in NAD, Kerinci Seblat National Park (KSNP) in Jambi Province and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) in Lampung Province.

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is a national park with a total area of 3,568 km2, spanning three provinces in southern Sumatra : Lampung, Bengkulu, and South Sumatra , in average only 45 km wide but 350 km long stretching along the Bukit Barisan mountain range.Topograpahically,the northern part of BBSNP is mountainous with its highest point at Gunung Pulung (1,964 m), while its southern section is a peninsula covering Bandar Lampung city with Lampung bay at the end point. It is covered by montane forest, lowland tropical forest, coastal forest and mangrove forest.

Plants in the park include Nipa palm, Casuarina equisetifolia, Anisoptera curtisii and Gonystylus bancanus, as well as Sonneratia, Pandanus, Shorea and Dipterocarpus species. Large flowers in the park include the Rafflesia arnoldii, Amorphophallus decus-silvae, Amorphophallus titanum and the world's largest orchid the Grammatophyllum speciosum.The park is home to many endangered and threatened species, including:
  • Sumatran elephant (about 500 animals, or 25% of the total remaining population of this subspecies live in the park)
  • Sumatran striped rabbit (most recent records of this poorly known species have been from the park)
  • Sumatran rhinoceros (an estimated 60-80 Sumatran rhinos live in the park; approximately the same number live in Gunung Leuser National Park, and when combined the two parks account for the majority of this species' population)
  • Sumatran tiger (approximately 40 adult tigers or 10% of the remaining Sumatran tigers live in the park).
Other animals in the park are the Malayan tapir, siamang, Sumatran surili, sun bear and lesser mouse-deer. There are over 300 species of bird in the park, like the critically endangered Sumatran ground-cuckoo.

While highland zone mostly on the west side, lowland zone which make up most of land coverage is situated on the eastern side of Lampung province.  The landscape of lowlands is mostly dominated by land coverage with swamps, mangrove and complex river systems.

Way Kambas National Park is among the  land coverages in the eastern part of Lampung Province. Way Kambas National Park is a national park covering 1,300 square kilometres in Lampung province, southern Sumatra, Indonesia   consisting of swamp forest and lowland rain forest. The park still has a few critically endangered Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and Sumatran rhinoceroses. It also provides excellent birdwatching, with the rare white-winged wood duck among the over 400 species present in the park.

Eco-tourism Destination in Lampung: Butterfly Release Center in Taman Kupu-Kupu Gita, Bandar Lampung.

Lampung has quite a lot of nature attractions from marine and beaches to National Parks. However, Taman Kupu Kupu, or Butterfly Park, Gita Persada offers a distinct destination of tourism in Lampung in term of nature-base tourism by presenting a re-engineered ecosystem as an attraction.In addition to being a place of conservation, the park is also the destination of nature and education tourism.


It all started in 1997 when Dr Herawati Sukardi, Butterfly experts from University of Lampung (UNILA), pioneered a re-engineering project of critical land at the foot of Mount BetungDesa Tanjung Manis, Kelurahan Kemiling as a conservation area of various species of butterflies from Sumatera. What was done by Dr. Herath was actually bred in captivity and also managed to manipulate the natural habitat, by apllying Habitat Enrichment Technique,  bringing back butterflies, becoming an environment which is really suitable for the survival of the butterfly.

Butterfly Park Gita Persada has approximately 180 species of butterflies. Here, it has already successfully bred 50 species including categorized rare and protected, namely: Troides Helena. Other species among others are Perut Merah, Limau Balak, Limau Halom, Limau Tutul, Kupu Hijau, Sirsak Biru, Sirsak Hijau, Ekor Pedang, Cacapuri, Johar Kuning, Kertas, Buntar, Daun Coklat, Widuri, Kepompong Emas, dsb.

The park is especially equipped with a big butterfly cage. The cage is used for rearing, growing and breeding butterflies. As a destination of  education tourism, many students, from kinder garden to university students, have made use of this park to find out how a butterfly metamophosis going through a  life cycle from the eggs to an adult butterfly.

The park, under the management of by Sahabat Alam Foundation,  covers an area of 4 hectares at an altitude of 460 meters above sea level. There is a fairly large wooden house, which is home to the Butterfly Museum and a tea house. Inside the museum, ones can find hundreds of butterflies that have been preserved, butterfly paintings, wooden sculpture, and accessories for sale. The butterflies are placed in a glass case, complete with information about the type of each butterfly

The management also provides other facilities in the park area. The facilities include children playground, public toilets, three tree houses, and equipment for photo taking session. The park is open every day from 09.00 to 17.00 WIB; Ones can enjoy all facilities in the park for a charge of only Rp 10,000.0 or less than US$ 1 per person.

When is the best time visiting the park? Butterflies flutter most freely in the park from January to march, though present beautifully and freely in other months of the year. So, the best month visiting the park is from January to March. Come and Enjoy the mother nature in the southern tip of Sumatra Island, particularly Taman Kupu Kupu Gita Persada.

Visit Bandar Lampung : Muncak Hill.


Mount Muncak at Tirtayasa, Pesawaran, Lampung has become so popular among youngsters in Lampung with new attraction of sight seeing Lampung bay, as well as Bandar Lampung.  This tourist spot offers as a spectacular view of seascape surrounding Lampung in Pesawaran regency, apart from landscape over Bandar Lampung stretching from Teluk Betung to the slope area of Tanjung Karang.


Muncak area lies in the border between Bandar Lampung and Pesawaran regency. The hill in Muncak has the panorama spanning from Teluk Betung on the left side and seascape including islands consisting of Pasaran Island, Kubur Island, Tangkil Island, and Tegal Island. During clear sky, you can even have the view of Pahawang Islands, as well as the cluster of Islands surrounding Krakatoa.


The most interesting site in Mucak area is Villa Muncak Teropong Laut. To get into the compound, you need to pay Rp 5,000.0 per person. The site has been so well known  among youngsters in Bandar Lampung through social media for photo taking as well as sight seeing.


There is a number of photo spots here, you can take photos in tree house, house on stilts, wooden balcony, window, as well as other spots. 

Apart from photo taking, visitors can seat and enjoy light snacks. Enjoying beautiful panorama here and having a cup coffee is a pleasant moment in Muncak area. to get the best moment do not at the weekend as so many young people coming, at least 400 visitors per day during weekdays and double in the weekend. Visitors can come either in the morning or evening since this place is open every day from 06.00 to 22.00. 

It takes thirty minutes of driving from Bandar Lampung to Muncak Hill. To access the site, visitors can take Jalan RE Martadinata,Teluk Betung to Lempasing. Then, before reaching Tirtayasa Park, turn to the right and follow the ascending asphalt road up to SD. No.9 (a primary school) and turn left to take a stoned road around 500 meters to get to the site. Have a stunning panorama then.

Kain Tapis : A Traditionally Woven Fabric of Lampung Province.

Lampung is well known for its traditional textile products such as Kain Tapis, or Tapis Fabric, and Sulaman Usus , or Intestine-shaped embroidery. These products are traditionally woven using Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin (ATBM) or non-machine device.

Kain Tapi is a traditional product of Lampung made with a special motif pattern of gold or silver thread.The basic ingredients of this fabric is cotton yarn woven traditionally. The motives decorated with gold or silver thread are made with embroidery technique or traditional embroidery techniques (modern). These crafts are made by women, both housewives and girls who were originally to fill leisure time with the aim to meet the demands of customs that are considered sacred.

This fabric is usually used by the women as a cover of the lower body, from waist to ankles. Recently, the use of Kain Tapis goes beyond women wearing but many other uses like fabric wall hangings, men' s clothes, T shirt, and a variety of souvenirs. 

The motifs  applied in Kain Tapis are generally the theme of nature, especially flora and fauna. There is also a particular fabric that lifts domestic life as Kain Tapis Cucuk Andak. In addition, there are differences in the motives influenced by their regions of origin. For example, Tapis Liwa from West Lampung,Tapis Pepadun from inland , Tapis Peminggir from coastal areas of Lampung. Motif on the Tapis Peminggir (Coastal) raises the dominant flora while the motif of Tapis Pepadun (Inland) tend to be simple and rigid.

The process of making traditional fabric like Kain Tapis is complex and must be done manually, so that the process can take weeks, even months. This makes Kain Tapis has a relatively expensive price. Price range of Kain Tapis vary greatly, depends on the complexity of motives, the proportion of gold thread, and the age of the cloth. The new Kain Tapis production generally range in the millions of rupiah. If it's been decades old, old piece of cloth filter can be hundreds of millions of rupiah and become collectibles.

Hot Spring Water, Way Belerang in Kalianda, South Lampung.

Another tourism attraction in the province on the southernmost of Sumatra in Way Belerang, Kalianda, South Lampung. Way Belerang is situated in on the foot of Mount Rajabasa making the area cooler and five kilometers away from Kalianda City. Way Belerang is under the management of Dinas Pariwisata dan ekonomi Kreatif , South Lampung Regency.

Way Belerang can be accessed through Kalianda City directly from Sumatra Highway connecting between Bakauheni and Bandar Lampung. Kalianda City is around 65 kms away or approximately two hour driving from Bandar Lampung. The driving route can starts from the Soekarno-Hatta Road (By Pass) and then to the Sumatra highway up to the Kalianda city with the landmark of Diamond Mosque or Masjid Intan on the right side.

When reached Kalianda city at the intersection of Kalianda city, close to Diamond Mosque, then turn the vehicle to the right toward the office of South Lampung Regent. from the intersection we would travel as far as  five kilometers to the location of the hot spring Sulfur water, Way Belerang, South Lampung. The road condition is smooth made of asphalt, you will need to ask the direction to local people to indicate the location of the thermal baths.

To get into the hot spring locations, visitors are only charged at a rate of IDR 5,000 - 10,000 per-person. It is distinguished from the age, children or adults, and is also seen from the types of vehicles that enter the motorcycle or car.

Apart from having fun by thermal bathing in Way Belerang, many people come here to this tourism object to cure skin diseases or dermatitis problems. So when you are on journey and happened to be on the way to or from Bakauheni, do not hesitate to stop by

Visit Lampung 2017: Pahawang Island, A Destination of Marine Enthusiasts.

If only you could fly and look down to southern tip of Sumatra Island, surely you would marvel at the Lampung gulf. Lampung Gulf, or Teluk Lampung, indeed, is so beautiful dotted with so many adorable islands, one of which is Pahawang Island. Pahawang Island is considered a "must" destination if you are marine enthusiasts as Pahawang island has become a new prime tourist destination in  Lampung province, following the success of the Gulf Kiluan with dolphins attractions, as well as Tanjung Setia, which has become the talks of the World as a surfing paradise in western coast of Lampung Province.

Administratively, Pahawang Island lies in the District of Punduh Padada, Pasawaran Regency,Lampung. Pahawang Island occupies an area of 1.084 Ha and has six hamlets, namely Suakbuah, Penggetahan, Jeralangan, Kelompok, Pahawang and Cukuhnyai with occupants of 1 533 inhabitants. 

Actually, a cluster of Pahawang Island comprise of many islands including Pahawang Kecil or Small Pahawang, Coral Island, as well as Kelagian Island, as well as Pahawang Besar Island. There are many snorkeling spots around the island. One of them there is a fishing boat that sank. The ship was so hideouts of fish and other marine animals. 

The underwater life surrounding this island is so diverse as there are many kinds of coral, fish, and marine plants. There are many types of clown fish :  Amphiprion ocellaris clownfish, Amphiprion clarkii, Premnas biaculeatus and Amphiprion frenatus and also various type of anemone. While in Tanjung Putus Island, Besides clownfish anemone, you will find Parrotfishes, Rabbitfishes, and  many type of Butterflyfishes  including Heniochus diphreutes, Heniochus varius, dan Heniochus chrysostomus. 

In Small Pahawang Island, you will find Taman Nemo or Anemon Garden. This spot is under managent by local people. It's good to know the involvement of local people around the islands of Pahawang out of their awareness that the islands are tourist destinations which has become their livelihood and need to be preserved rather than damaged. So fishermen here began transplanting corals at this location, breeding sea anemone.

Collective Memories Of Krakatau Eruption August 27, 1883: 26th Krakatau Festival 2016.

 Modern history records the Krakatoa eruption in August 27 1883 as one of the most deadly volcanic eruptions in recent times. It took the life of more than 36,000 people. Many died as a result of thermal injury from the blasts and many more were victims of the tsunamis that followed the collapse of the volcano into the caldera below sea level.

After more than a century, people in the southern part of Sumatera island, now administratively known as Lampung province,  preserve collective memories of the catastrophic event through oral traditions as well literature works. In the policy context,  Krakatau Festival is intentionally held by the provincial government of Lampung to pass on the pooled information of the eruption and the aftermaths to younger generation in Indonesia in general, Lampung province in particular.

Krakatau Festival is an annual celebration held by the Provincial Government of Lampung to  promote the culture, traditions, as well as the potential of tourism in the province of Lampung. Krakatau Festival is held since 1991 with the aim to celebrate or commemorate the eruption event of Krakatoa in 1883 which was reportedly sounded to a radius of 4500 km and took about 36,000 casualties and eruptive cloud spread to the European continent. From the devastating events that then, the government of Lampung Province to commemorate the historic momentum by showcasing the culture, traditions, and the tourism potential of Lampung.

The 26th Krakatau Festival is held from 14 to 28 August 2016 the Government of Lampung Province  with a series of activities including: Lampung Food Festival, Festival Archipelago Adventurer V, Extreme Fishing, Festival Opening Ceremony Krakatau, Tour Krakatau, Lampung Culture and Tapis Carnaval VI. The Agenda of Krakatau Festival 2016 is as follows :


1. Lampung Food Festival.This event is a food exhibition event to be held in London on August 14, 2016 by the Provincial Government of Lampung;


2. Adventurers Festival Nusantara V. This event is an event organized by the Provincial Government of Lampung to collect the adventurous in the whole country as a platform to meet and exchange experiences and to follow the adventure together. This event will be held on 15-17 August 2016 at the Trump-Krakatau;


3. Extreme Fishing. Extreme Fishing is a new event in the Festival Krakatau in Lampung province held by the government to show what it feels the pull of the fish in Lampung waters. This event will be held on 18 to 19 August 2016 Aquatic Lampung;


4. Opening Ceremony Festival Krakatau. This event is the opening of the Krakatau Festival 26 by offering traditional dances Lampung, Lampung creation dance and others as well as the beating of gongs as a symbol of the opening of the Krakatau  Festival 26. This event will be held in Bandar lampung on August 26, 2016;

5. Krakatau Tour.This tour is one of the main series of events serving as Marine tourism and introduce natural and cultural beauty of the Lampung bay is an effort to attract both local and foreign tourists. This event will be starting at Kalianda and cruise to the Mount of Anak Krakatau on 27th August, 2016.

6. Lampung Culture & "Tapis" Carnival VIThis event is the culmination of Krakatau Festival is a carnival involving a variety of traditions and cultures Lampung. This event will be held in the city of Bandar Lampung on August 28, 2016. The Carnival will be a closing event of Krakatau Festival XXIV and claimed to provide entertainment full of culture and traditions of the community elements of Lampung Province.Because only at the carnival event the public can see the fashion creations of fantasy that puts the "Tapis" fabric as their inspiration. They will feature fantasy fashion creations of "Tapis"  loaded with cultural splendor of Lampung.

The Charm of Teluk Kiluan, Lampung, Indonesia.

The bay is situated at the end of  mountain range,the Bukit Barisan which stretches from the northernmost island of Sumatra in Aceh province down to the southernmost of Lampung province so that the topography is hilly and valley.
