A Muslim ruler named Fatahilklah conquered the city, as many of Asian countries and cities challenged and conquered by Muslims, and changed its name into Jayakarta or City of Victory in June 1527. Later in early 1600 the city was ruled by Dutch for 300 years. It remained their central Southeast Asian post in that era. After a freedom struggle on August 1945 the Indonesian claimed their independence.

The National Monument (Monas or Monumen Nasional) is a 132 meter tall obelisk located in the center of Merdeka Square (the central park) also an icon of the city and a symbol of the struggle of Indonesia. There are diving facilities, underwater aquarium, glass bottom boat, swimming pool, sunset cruise, exploring the islands in Pilau Seribu in the afternoon (only available on weekends), or even a Tennis court.

Tidung Island, Jakarta

Tidung Island, later called by the backpacker Indonesia as the New Paradise, is the largest island among the group of islands in the Thousand Islands. The island is already inhabited by people since the Dutch colonial era. In the book History of Jakarta mentioned that when Fatahillah invaded Malacca, he and his troops to use the existing islands in the Bay of Jakarta as a place to set the strategy. One of the island was named "Tidung" which means shelter.

Tidung Island is the center of Pulau Seribu District. The island is inhabited by more than three thousand head of the family. Most of the inhabitants are fishermen.

To the east of the island there is an island named "Small Tidung." Now both of these islands are connected by a wooden bridge that is very beautiful. We can down the bridge, looking down the clear sea with stunning coral reefs and colorful fish. The length of the bridge about 2 miles. Around the bridge there are several fish cages owned by local fishermen.

Although not a tourist island, the island is very comfortable to be used as place of recreation for the people who want to enjoy the atmosphere of the island with a low cost. Clear ocean water and white sand beach, is very beautiful to be enjoyed. Enchantment of the sun in the morning and evening is the beautiful scenery every day. So do not be surprised if the backpacker call this island as a new paradise for lovers of community tourism.

Swimming and fishing on the island is very pleasant. Visitors can fish on the pier, bridge, or rent a fishing boat. Diving and snorkeling can also be exciting activities on the island. Especially now widely available equipment rental plus snorkeling and diving guides and small boat.

Lodging
There are many accommodation facilities available here. In the past year, construction of new inn continues to be done by residents to anticipate the number of visitors continues to increase. If any existing inn is full, we could stay at the house of one resident. Generally they are very friendly in serving the guests. If you want to get something to eat can also be purchased at food stalls. There was rice, meatballs, chicken noodle and others. We also can order catering at home resident. They must be willing to accept that we order catering. About price, not expensive, really. Only about Rp 15.000 to Rp 17.000 rupiah for one meal.

To reach this island, could be from Port "Muara Angke" Jakarta, or from the Port "Muara Cituis" Tangerang. To the Port of Muara Angke, we can ride public transportation from Grogol. Meanwhile, if passed Tangerang, we can drive from Terminal "Pasar Baru".
