The history of Brooklyn Bridge starts right from the start of its construction. The construction started in 1870 and took another thirteen year to complete finally in 1883. At that time this bridge was a wonder for the world. The bridge is one of the several masterpiece bridges designed by John Augustus Roebling.
One day Augustus Roebling was crossing the bridge with ferry boat but ended up stuck in the ice, this was the story behind the idea of creating bridge across the East River.
Unfortunately he died during the work was in progress. John Augustus was German born road builder also worked for Prussian government as road and bridge builder.
After his death his son, Washington Roebling took over the command of project of Brooklyn Bridge Manhattan. Washington himself suffered poor health his supervisory period and suffered from the caisson-disease. Her wife took engineering and overseer duties to her hand and conveyed massages from Washington Roebling to workers. 20 out of 600 workers died while working on the bridge.
Bridge was opened on May 24, 1883 with firework celebration. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of thousand people and many ships in East BaY. President Chester A. Arthur and Mayor Franklin Edson were also presence at ceremony. About 150000 people crossed the bridge the President and Mayor were the first of them. To make bridge strong a network of cables of which four strongest have a diameter of 11 inches are anchored in the ground. The other cables are strong enough to support the bridge.
