The first image which tourist, from around the world who visit USA, wants to see is the Statue of Liberty. This is not only recognition of New York but also USA. It was the gift given to USA by the French government for the 100 anniversary of America’s Independence.
The French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper statue completed in 1884. While shipped to NY Harbor after a year later. The sculpture is of a robed crowned lady, has seven spikes, symbolizing the Seven Seas and Seven Continents across which liberty should be spread, having a tablet (upon which is inscribed the date of Declaration of Independence) in her left hand while left hand has a torch( symbolizing Enlightenment).
Statue soon became the icon of USA, featured in numerous Hollywood movies. The French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who made the Eiffel Tower, made the steel framework for Liberty Statue, with original copper plates attached with metal framework and for its support the large iron bars attach with framework. It construction is much stronger to withstand heavy storms.
After completion Bartholdi himself went US to discuss with Ulyssess S. Grant (US President) where to erect the statue. The island near the harbor of NYC (a small island) was finalized. Since then, the island is known as Liberty Island. The statue was erected ten years later, after construction of the pedestal for it, in 1886 with an officially inauguration by president Grover Cleveland. The Americans themselves collected the funds for it. During this session the torch remain displayed in Madison Square Park.
Before discussion on the height of statue we tell you that The Statue of Liberty is open 364 days per year only remain closed on 25 December (Christmas Day). This Tall Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall without pedestal. And with pedestal it reaches on height of 305 feet the pedestal is 154 feet tall. The 354 steps staircase inside the statue can take up you to the crown here visitors can have a spectacular view over NYC.
