Understanding Museum in Indonesia

In general terms the museum can be interpreted as the repository of relics of history are laid out in such a way to facilitate the public to watch. According to Wikipedia, a museum is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Museum serves to collect, maintain, and presenting and preserving the cultural heritage of the community for the purpose of study, research and enjoyment or entertainmen.

Based on Government Regulation No. 19 In 1995, the museum is an institution, storage, maintenance, security and utilization of objects material evidence and the result of human culture and the natural environment to support the protection and preservation of the cultural wealth of the nation. Meanwhile, according to the International Council of Museums (ICOM): Guidelines for Museum Indoneisa in 2008. museum is a permanent institution, non-profit, serving the society and its development, open to the public, acquire, maintain, connect and showcase artifacts concerning the identity of people and the environment for the purposes of study, education and recreation.

What is the function of a museum in Indonesia? Based on Government Regulation No. 19 Year 1995 on Guidelines for Museum Indonesia 2008, the museum has the task of storing, maintaining, securing and utilizing museum collections in the form of objects of cultural heritage. Thus, the museum has two major functions, namely:
  •  As a place of preservation, museum must carry out the following activities: Storage, which includes the collection of objects to be collection, recording collections, numbering system and the arrangement of the collection; Care, which includes activities to prevent and mitigate damage to collections; And, Security, which includes the protection to maintain the collection of disruption or destruction by natural factors and human activity.
  •  As a source of information, the museum conducting utilization through research and presentation. The study was conducted to develop a national culture, science and technology. Presentation must consider aspects of preservation and security.

How are museums classified in Indonesia? Museum in Indonesia can be distinguished by the following classification (Ayo Mengenal Museum; 2009) :
    •  The types of collections owned by the museum, that there are two types: Public Museum, museum collection consists of a collection of human and material evidence or the environment related to various branches of art, science and technology disciplines; Special Museum, museum collection consists of a collection of material evidence of man or the environment related to one branch of art, a branch of science or the technology branch.
      • The type museum based on its position, there are three types: The National Museum, the museum collection consists of a collection of objects derived, represent and material evidence related to humans or the environment from all parts of Indonesia that national worth; Provincial Museum, the museum collection consists of a collection of objects derived, represent and material evidence related to humans and the environment of the region or province in which the museum is located; Local Museum, the museum collection consists of a collection of objects derived, represent and material evidence related to humans or the environment of the district or municipality where the museum is located.
